Since the mid-1990’s, I have been interested in the “Nuevo Tango” of composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992). The Piazzolla tango is known for its insistent 3-3-2 rhythm.

Other elements are some Bach-like arpeggiated chords and even Bartok-like harmony mingle with the distinctly Argentinian music form. Piazzolla reinvented and popularized tango. He was a rare blend of classical and popular music including an influence of jazz. What’s not to like?

I have written three songs where I try (in my own way) to incorporate a Piazzolla influence: “Reverie,” “Astoria,” and “Tango Blue.”

Stay safe.
Love,
Reyn
