“Tales from the North Woods”
(Composed and performed by Reynold Philipsek copyright 2010 Zino-Rephi Music (BMI))
Recorded by Stymie Seamans
There are quite a few tunes I have written and recorded which just seem to vanish like Ambrose Bierce (an obscure and dated reference but that’s what I like about it).
It’s not that these songs deserve their disappearance, it’s just that if I don’t for some reason keep the song in my active performing repertoire the song sails off of into the sunset.
(Sometimes I “rediscover” these pieces and then “reactivate” them.)
I began writing and recording my own songs very early on. When I was about 14 years old my mother bought a reel to reel tape recorder from Penney’s. It ran at 7 1/2 IPS speed and could record “sound on sound” or, in other words, I could record two distinct parts separately. This is when I began overdubbing one guitar part over another.
This piece was done in that old method and it has a certain jaunty spirit to it that I had forgotten and was pleasantly reminded of upon a recent chance hearing on Spotify.
This recording is actually three separate guitar parts-(one rhythm guitar part on each the left and right channel which essentially double each other and the center position in the sound field is the lead guitar/iimprov solo.) So headphones put you in a choice audio position for a simple but distinct stereo soundscape from 3 sources. One of my better and more imaginative improv solos too I think.
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
