Raymond Chandler’s fictional detective Philip Marlowe is a favorite of mine. On several occasions, I have tried to convey the “film noir” vibe. The latest being “Neon City” and one piece (“Hong Kong Harry”) I even wrote a hard-boiled detective narrative. I am sucker for the very American literary genre of the “hardboiled” detective. The grit of American city life of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s and the narrative style in the voice-over of the protagonist etc.

As for film portrayals of Marlowe I still prefer Bogart though Mitchum is a close second.

Sometimes I think I’m just a frustrated or wannabe film score composer. Music is very visual for me. Certain melodies or chords or chord sequences produce any almost synesthesia experience in me.
I have recorded this piece three times and this is the most interesting take on it so far but I still think a better version is out there.

This piece had been a source of some frustration because I know it could really become something but always stops a little short. Still, there is a sort of harmonic ambiance in this piece that is unique for me. The chords are not standard “shapes” and since the song arrived very spontaneously one day it remains a favorite. I am a true believer in what Jung called the “collective unconscious” and when music just “happens” for me that belief is just reinforced. By the way, I have never performed this song in a live situation.

I have also included a solo version of the song as the second link. So, as usual, feel free to compare. Remember, I like some feedback on these emails.

Thanks.
