The word “matka” means mother in Polish and Czech. I was in the mood to write a “folkish” melody one day, I guess, when I came up with this. Or at least my idea of a “folkish” melody but then everything about the musical process is subjective.

My grandmother was born in Poland and many of my ancestors are from that neck of the woods.

The backing rhythm is a sort of bolero. I was thinking in terms of street “buskers” like you might see on some European city backstreet or in a small cafe.

That type of thing has always appealed to me for some reason and I’ve made a lot of music that reflects that fondness.

I like the combination of guitar and accordion much the same way I like guitar and harmonica or guitar and violin as a combo and I have recorded quite a bit with all of those instruments.

Take care.

Be kind.

Love,
Reyn
