The idea of this piece was to depict the opening of a flower by “opening” up the harmony as the song evolves. The harmonies (to my ears) are a bit “Ravelian”. (My better pieces emanate from chords I work up on my early 20th century Henry F. Miller upright piano and then apply to guitar to arrange.)
The late Wayne Shorter was also sort of a model on this one. His minimalistic compositions like “Fall” or “Nefertiti” utilize spacious harmony, unusual form and a sort of languorous mood. The melody should almost seem to be floating in space.
By the way, Chrysanthemums symbolize friendship and well-being.
I like that. We all need some friendship and well-being around about now.
This track appears on the “Picture This” album from October, 2018.
