I am, as most Americans are, the descendant of immigrants. It seems that is forgotten sometimes.
One of my grandmothers was born in Poland (Mechnica, Krapkowice, Opole Voivodeship, Poland). She lived to be 92 and came to the U.S. at the age of 12. (I’ll come back to this later.)*
This piece is simple like a folk song but with a few small harmonic
twists. The song is pretty much all constructed from the G Gypsy (Hungarian) minor scale which is in keeping with the overall theme. There’s also something very satisfying in being able to tell a “story” in one minute and 23 seconds.
Lastly, a babushka is a term for a head scarf and also a Slavic term for grandmother. Incidentally, my grandmother nearly always wore a “babushka.” Ergo, my “babushka” often wore a “babushka”.
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
