The word “matka” essentially means “Mom” in Polish and Czech. I was in the mood to write a “folkish” melody one day and came up with this. Or at least it’s my idea of a “folkish” melody but then everything about the musical process is subjective.
In many ways this continues the pattern from last week’s email/link in so much that it is a kind of a theme for an imaginary movie.
The backing rhythm is a “bolero”. I was thinking in terms of a street scene with “buskers” like you might see on some European city backstreet or in a small sidewalk cafe. That type of thing always appealed to me for some unknown reason.
I like the combination of guitar and accordion much the same way I like guitar with harmonica (Clint Hoover) or guitar with violin (Gary Schulte). (I have also recorded with button accordionist Patrick Harison and, of course, accordionist Denny Malmberg. Denny plays wonderfully subtle stuff on this one.)
Take care.
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
