Some years ago, I hit on the idea of a song where the protagonist is a supposed “stoic type.” He (the guy in the song) slowly and progressively lets his feelings show while, all the while, not realizing how much he is revealing.
I see lots of guys like that out in the wild, and I may be a little like that myself. We all have to eventually learn how to navigate emotional “deepwater,” and this song and video explore that metaphor. At times like this, singing can become sort of an acting job.
A unique aspect of this track is that there is no guitar solo. This was recorded at Prince’s Paisley Park Studio on a Sunday at the end of February 1993.
I had read that McCartney sometimes built a song off of a short drum loop and an active (almost meandering) bass line. That was the starting point for this song musically. Paul McCartney has often been an inspiration for me, especially when constructing a totally solo recording.
I don’t often listen to my own songs or watch the videos, but I keep coming back to this one.
Like most of my videos, this one was produced by Rene Erickson.
(Headphones please. Lots of stuff hidden in the stereo mix.)
Be kind.
Love,
Reyn
