My childhood television memory of “beatniks” comes from the Sid Caesar show. Sid played a beatnik/bebop musician that is being interviewed by Carl Reiner.
Reiner asks Sid, “how many guys in your band?”
Sid answers, “we have four cats in the combo. One on piano, one on drums, one on bass, and one on radar.”
“Radar?” Reiner asks.
“Yeh, he lets us know when we are getting too close to the melody.”
It is amazing how impressions like that can stay with you.
Along with my musette, “Butterfly,” this is a staple of my live gig.
